A Threat to YouTube?
Recently, a group of ex-Google employees launched Howcast, a site that wants to be the “YouTube of instructional videos.” While there have been many attempts at creating a new repository for video, this site has some potential. Unlike competitors, like Expert Village, this new site has a formula for each video and has one client series worth $8 million.
Forumla: The Howcast graphic, an intro explaining what you’ll need for the task at a hand, and step-by-step instructions explained in a voiceover.
Player: The video player on the site lets you jump to different chapters or steps, lets you zoom in for a better look, and provides the transcript as well.
Interaction: Viewers can add comments in the form of tips, warnings, and facts to each video.
Site: The Flash-based site lets you browse the video directory on the left hand side while you are watching a video without interrupting it or going to a different page.
Like all new sites, we will continue to monitor but still focus on YouTube for our community video projects.
